Encountering a seal at the beach?

Seals are beautiful creatures and we are lucky to have them in our region.
They can often look sick or injured when they are just resting. It is important you and your pets stay well away from them at all times.
Seals need to rest for long periods and sometimes people confuse this long rest time with them being sick or injured. Seals recover quickly from most injuries as most wounds are generally superficial and will heal by themselves. Fortunately, reports of sick or injured seals often turn out to be false alarms and, in most cases, seals do not need human intervention.
Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia have put together the Be Seal Wise program that offers great advice on what to do when you see a seal at the beach:
  • Enjoy seals from a distance
  • Keep any pets well away
  • Let them rest
  • If you are unsure if a seal needs assistance, maintain your distance and contact the Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055
