Peace runners arrive in Ravensthorpe

The world’s longest and largest torch relay, the Peace Run, recently passed through Ravensthorpe and the runners were met by Cr Sue Leighton.

The Peace Run is encircling Australia and is expected to cover 15,500 km in 111 days. The international team of runners are meeting with schools and communities along the way  to share the torch and promote a more peaceful world.

 

More than eight million people have participated in the Peace Run since it was started in 1987, including Pope Francis, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Muhammad Ali, Cathy Freeman, sporting, humanitarian and entertainment celebrities and many school children across 165 different nations. 

Cr Leighton met the runners at the Genestreams Sculpture at the Ravensthorpe Cultural Precinct and also invited them to visit the Kukenarup Memorial.

The runners came from all around the world including Mongolia, Poland, Russia, Finland and the United States of America.
