The Shire of Ravensthorpe recently recognised the remarkable contribution of Enid Tink OAM, awarding her the title of Honorary Freeman of the Shire.
The title of Honorary Freeman is the highest honour the Shire can bestow on a community member and recognises outstanding and meritorious service to the district for 15 years or longer.
Enid was formally presented with the honour at the opening of the 44th annual Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show, an event she has contributed to for more than four decades.
Her involvement dates to the first ever show and has included providing more than 500 botanical specimens as a licensed picker.
“It’s wonderful to see how the show has grown over the years, “ Mrs Tink said.
“I’ve picked flowers since the start, and I’ve just been amazed at what flowers I’ve been able to find over the years.”
Despite four decades of picking flowers, Mrs Tink said she couldn’t choose a favourite, although she admitted to having a particular fondness for acacias and their brilliant yellows.
Mrs Tink is also a life member of the Ravensthorpe Historical Society and has helped catalogue and record more than 4,000 items for the Museum collection.
Her community involvement has extended across the Visitors Centre, Ravensthorpe Facility Care Committee, Centenary Committee, Country Women’s Association, Senior Citizens, Ravensthorpe Uniting Church and the Old Cemetery Renovation Committee.
Mrs Tink said her many years of volunteering had never been about personal recognition.
“I didn’t do any of it for personal gain. I just think that if you don’t put yourself out there in a small country town, then you miss out, “ she said.
“There wouldn’t be any committees or events.”
Shire President Cr Rachel Gibson said it was fitting that Mrs Tink was presented with the honour at the event which she had contributed so much to.
“It was a privilege to bestow our Shire’s highest honour on Mrs Tink, on stage surrounded by the flowers, volunteers and community that have been such an important part of her life.” Cr Gibson said.
“Enid has quietly given an enormous amount of time to our community over many years, and her contribution can be seen across so many parts of life in Ravensthorpe.
“It was lovely and very fitting to recognise that through the highest honour our Shire can bestow.”
Mrs Tink joins a small group of community members who have been awarded the title of Honour Freeman of the Shire of Ravensthorpe.
