Message of condolence

The Shire of Ravensthorpe is deeply saddened by the passing of former Shire President Keith Dunlop. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Ann, their children, family and friends.

Keith was passionate about our community and devoted many years to volunteering in emergency services, including as captain of the Hopetoun Volunteer Fire & Emergency Services and commander of the Hopetoun Volunteer Marine Rescue Group. He was also involved with the acquisition of a building to house all emergency services in Hopetoun, which remains the current location today and is a fantastic fit for purpose site in a central location.

Not long after being elected councillor in 2008, Keith worked closely with BHP to ensure they remained financially committed to our community when their site was closed down in early 2009.

He then served as Deputy President for a spell before taking on the role of President from 2015-2023. During this time floods and drought had a huge impact on our region and Keith advocated for special disaster funding from the Commonwealth Government to help Ravensthorpe bounce back. This included securing the funding for the Ravensthorpe Cultural Precinct, which is a wonderful facility currently being used by multiple community groups and services every day.

Cr Sue Leighton worked alongside Keith for many years, including as Deputy President during his last term.

“As a councillor and president, I found Keith to be a quiet and confidential leader,” she said.

“He led the council through some extraordinary tough and difficult times, he will be missed and I offer my sincere condolences to Ann and the Dunlop family.”

The flags at both Shire of Ravensthorpe offices will be at half-mast today.
