The Shire of Ravensthorpe is excited to be working with the WA Government through Tourism WA on a proposal to explore a small-scale nature based tourism accommodation opportunity at Hamersley Inlet Reserve near Fitzgerald River National Park.
At a Special Council Meeting held in Ravensthorpe on Tuesday 2 June 2026, Council endorsed eco tourism operator Wander as the preferred proponent following a competitive selection process.
The concept currently being explored includes a limited number of low-impact short-stay accommodation cabins designed to complement the natural environment and existing tourism experiences offered by the Shire at Hamersley Inlet Reserve.
The next stage of the process will involve detailed planning and significant consultation with Traditional Owners and the community to ensure cultural and environmental considerations, along with community views, are fully understood before any decisions are made.
Shire President Cr Rachel Gibson said the Shire recognised the proposal would generate strong community interest.
“We understand our community will have a range of views about any future tourism development near the Fitzgerald River National Park,” she said.
“That is why community consultation will be a critical part of the process from the very beginning.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to carefully explore how sensitive, low impact tourism accommodation can provide economic and tourism benefits for our region.”
The proposal is being supported through the WA Government’s National Park Tourism Experiences Development program, which aims to encourage sustainable tourism opportunities near national parks.
The Shire will provide further information about extensive community consultation opportunities as planning progresses.
We invite all members of the community to take part in the consultation process.
