President’s Report: Tuesday 17 February 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting

Published on Wednesday, 18 February 2026 at 8:56:12 AM

At last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Councillors considered a range of items that reflect both community priorities and future planning for our Shire.

We were pleased to support the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show Inc with $2,000 to assist in sending a delegation to the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show in March. This is a great opportunity to showcase our region and its unique flora to a national audience.

Council also supported $5,000 towards a community engagement event being planned by RAIN following the 2025/2026 bushfires, subject to the group securing the additional funding required. Supporting community recovery and connection remains important to us.

In Hopetoun, Council approved a change of use for an existing commercial premises on Veal Street to allow it to operate as a fast food outlet, with appropriate conditions. We look forward to seeing local business activity continue to grow.

In August last year we received a letter from the Hopetoun Senior Citizens requesting a speed reduction on Veal Street. Last night Council confirmed support for a proposed 40 km/h speed limit in key sections of:

  1. Veal Street, Hopetoun (Tamar Street to Esplanade West)
  2. Morgans Street, Ravensthorpe (Dance Street to Elston Street)

The next step will be working with Main Roads WA to formally assess and progress the proposal.  Council authorised the CEO to begin those discussions with Main Roads WA.

Finally, Council approved the commencement of refurbishment works for the Youth and Arts Space in Hopetoun, with priority given to essential compliance works to ensure the facility can be lawfully occupied.  Council also stated there is no additional funding to allocate to this project.

As always, we appreciate the community’s interest in Council decisions and encourage you to stay engaged with what’s happening across the Shire.
