It was great to return to a full Council this week following the recent election, with Cr Helen Burton and Cr Geoff Fyfe joining the Shire of Ravensthorpe Council. I warmly welcome them both and look forward to their contributions to our community.
At this week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Council considered key matters including bushfire mitigation planning and regional transport access.
Council noted the planned prescribed burn program for 2026, delivered under the Bushfire Risk Mitigation Plan 2024 to 2029. The Shire recognises the importance of ensuring any bushfire mitigation is undertaken with a strong understanding of the environment, including relevant vegetation complexes, and reviews all such matters when considering prescribed burning proposals.
These works reduce fuel loads and help protect lives, property and the environment, while supporting safer conditions for emergency services.
Planned burns include areas around Ravensthorpe, Munglinup and Hopetoun, as well as key coastal and road reserve locations. The full list is available on the Shire website.
Council also discussed seeking approval from Main Roads Western Australia to allow some heavy vehicles to carry larger loads on approved local roads.
Vehicles like road trains and B doubles are only allowed on certain roads that have been assessed as safe for their size, including checks on bridges, road conditions and visibility.
The proposed change would allow accredited operators to carry heavier loads, provided they meet strict safety requirements and use approved systems to manage their loads.
Keeping our road network safe for all users remains a priority. Measures like this help ensure heavy vehicles operate within safe limits, supporting both industry and the safety of local residents and visitors.
If approved, this would help improve freight efficiency across the region while maintaining a safe and reliable road network.
Council meetings are open to the public and we encourage everyone to attend and ask questions. We would welcome your involvement.
Cr Rachel Gibson
Shire President
