The Shire of Ravensthorpe congratulates the Ravensthorpe Hopetoun Future Fund (RHFF) on the purchase of the supermarket building at 76 Morgans Street in Ravensthorpe.

The RHFF is a local charity that was established in 2010 when the BHP Nickel Mine closed and $5 million was gifted to the community. Since then the RHFF has invested in local initiatives that improve the welfare, culture and amenity for the people living within the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

The Shire performs the secretariat role for the board of the RHFF and while the Shire President and Chief Executive Officer join community members on the board, the RHFF remains independent from the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

This purchase is a wonderful outcome for Ravensthorpe and the reopening of the supermarket building will also benefit the wider community and visitors to the region.

As landlord the RHFF now has direct control on the selection of a supermarket operator and can set service delivery levels through lease conditions.

Prior to closing in February 2025 the FoodWorks supermarket in Ravensthorpe had ongoing problems. The Shire had received numerous complaints regarding standard of food hygiene and out of date food handling practices, and had attempted without success to work with the owner to improve practices.

The building was also indentified as having major structural flaws and cannot be occupied until those flaws are fixed.

The Shire of Ravensthorpe looks forward to working with the RHFF to ensure the building is compliant.

Shire President Rachel Gibson welcomed the announcement and said the purchase was great news for Ravensthorpe residents.

“Having a community-focused organisation invest in this property will greatly benefit the town and the region,” she said.

“The Future Fund has the money to buy the building and the Shire has the expertise to carry out the work to get it ready to house another business for our community to benefit from.”
