President's Report: Meetings for June 2026

Published on Wednesday, 17 June 2026 at 10:52:45 AM

Council held two meetings this month, with a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 2 June and an Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 16 June.

Public Health Plan

At the Special Council Meeting, Council adopted the Shire's first Public Health Plan.

The Shire of Ravensthorpe Public Health Plan 2026–2031 provides a framework for how we will support the health and wellbeing of our community over the next five years through services, facilities, partnerships and advocacy.

You might not immediately think of local government when you hear the words "public health", however there are many ways Council contributes to the health and wellbeing of our community. From parks, playgrounds, sporting facilities and footpaths through to community spaces, environmental health services and opportunities for people to stay active and connected, local government has an important role to play.

The plan helps ensure we continue to take a proactive approach to supporting healthy, resilient communities both now and into the future.

Tourism proposal for Hamersley Inlet Reserve

Council also endorsed tourism operator Wander as the preferred proponent to explore a small scale nature based tourism accommodation opportunity at Hamersley Inlet Reserve. The project is grant funded and will involve research, technical studies, planning and consultation to determine its feasibility.

Bushfire Advisory Committee recommendations

Moving to the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 16 June, Council endorsed a number of recommendations from the Bushfire Advisory Committee aimed at strengthening bushfire preparedness across the district. The recommendations included measures to improve communication with volunteers, support the ongoing training of Fire Control Officers and advocate for improvements to fire management issues affecting our community.

New audit and risk committee

Council also established a new Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee, known as ARIC. The committee has been introduced as part of new State Government requirements and will play an important role in strengthening Council's oversight of governance, risk management, financial accountability and continuous improvement.

The committee will help ensure Council continues to operate transparently, responsibly and in the best interests of our community.

Planning for the future

Council also noted the review of the Strategic Community Plan, with work now beginning on the development of the next plan.

This is an important process that helps guide Council's priorities and decision making for the years ahead. We are very much in planning mode and looking at ways we can continue to support this wonderful region we live in and love.

I would also like to thank everyone who completed a survey as part of the recent community consultation process. Your feedback will help shape the draft of the next plan and guide Council's future priorities.

As always, thank you for taking an interest in the work of your Council. I hope to see you at the next Council meeting.

Cr Rachel Gibson

Shire President
