Vehicles on beaches and dog areas draft plans for public comment

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 20 June 2023, Council resolved to advertise the following draft plans for public comment

The Shire of Ravensthorpe is currently reviewing where vehicles are permitted on beaches and where dogs are permitted to be walked both on and off-leash throughout the Shire.

Sharing our natural world is a key part of the Shire's Community Strategic Plan.

Community input on these topics is welcome. These draft plans take into account the response to the two community surveys carried out earlier in the year.

Vehicles on beaches

Council endorsed the vehicles on beaches draft plan to go out for further public comment after strong reaction to the survey carried out from 14 March to 14 April 2023. Amendments to areas are based on community requests to alleviate confusion; and to update to contemporary expectations considering issues around environmental impact, speed, safety and public recreation.

For example, one proposal based on the survey results is to prohibit vehicles east of the vehicle entrance at the Hopetoun Caravan Park, and extend a ‘speed limited’ area to the Keplar St carpark to the west of the Hopetoun Caravan Park vehicle access point.

Dog Areas

Close to 300 people completed the survey on dog areas, clearly showing this is a topic many feel very strongly about. The majority of people wanted to keep most of the current on-leash and off-leash areas in place, with some minor changes.

The overwhelming majority also wanted to make the Hopetoun Sports Oval (next to the cricket oval) an on-leash area. This is currently marked as dogs prohibited at all times.

Your views on these draft plans are encouraged and welcomed.

Copies are available for inspection at both Shire of Ravensthorpe offices in Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe, they can also be viewed as attachments by clicking on the links in blue at the top of this page.
